    Description

Offered is this lovely square platter or serving tray in the classic Blue Onion or Blue Danube pattern. The impressed words Colln Meissen are impressed on the back along with a cobalt blue mark
The tray has a reticulated cupped rim that resembles lattice work or basket weaving.
The tray measures 9.25 inches square (23.5 cm).
It is in excellent used condition with no chips, cracks or scratches.
In a separate listing, we will be offering 12 dessert or salad plates that also are marked Meissen but with a different backstamp. The plates and platter were purchased from the same estate. They are pictured together in the last photo.
The history of Meissen Blue Onion is recounted in chapter 9 of Robert E. Rontgen’s reference work, “The Book of Meissen” second edition.
Rontgen says the pattern was adapted from a porcelain bowl brought back from China and dating from the K’ang Hsi Period of 1662 to 1722. The “onion” resulted from European artists adapting the fruits on the Chinese bowl to a form more familiar to them. The result was a rim design that many viewers interpreted to be an onion, although that was never the intent.
The center design of each piece of Blue Onion is comprised of a bent bamboo cane on the left, offset by a large blossom at the top right. The blossom is variously interpreted to be a chrysanthemum, aster or peony.
